How to Program TV with Directv Remote?

Is your Directv remote not working? If your DIRCTV system is new, the remote may need to be programmed first. If the instruction manuals give you a headache, don't worry - we have all the information on how to program a DIRECTV remote.

Before you continue reading, you need to decide which remote model you own. There are two types of DIRCTV remote - Universal Remote and Genie Remote. If you are not sure what you have, you can compare your remote with the images below.

Universal Remote

Your universal remote can control up to four devices, including TVs, game consoles, DVD players and more. That way, instead of having multiple remotes for multiple devices, you can easily control all your devices with one remote.

The mode switch at the top of the remote determines which device it controls. You can change the device designated remotely by the slider by switching your desired device settings (DIRECTV, AV1, AV2 and TV) to control the corresponding device.

How to program the DIRCTV Universal Remote

You can program the DIRTTV universal remote control with a DVRTV, Blu-ray player, or other device using a non-screen pair or a manual pair.

Do yourself a Universal Remote Program. To manually connect your universal remote, follow these steps:

1. Turn on your TV and receiver.
2. Find a five-digit code for your TV brand using DIRECTV's website.
3. Make sure that the mode switch on your remote is set to the TV.
4. Press and hold the mute and select buttons until the green light of the remote comes up twice.
5. Enter the five-digit remote-control code from step two.
6. Test the connection by directing the remote to the TV and pressing the volume up button. If volume increases, move on to the next step. If nothing happens, repeat steps two, three, and four with a different code. There are several possible codes depending on your TV's model number.
7. Press and hold the mute and select buttons again until the green light on the remote flash twice.
8. Enter the 960 code on the remote keypad. The green light should flash twice.
9. Set the mode switch to DIRCTV mode.
10. Your remote should now be paired and ready to go. 

To program your DIRCTV remote, follow the steps below for your type of DVR or receiver.

Program DIRCTV Universal Remote for HD DVR or HD Receiver

1. Press the Menu button on your remote.
2.  From the non-screen instructions, select Settings and Help> Settings> Remote control> Program remote.
3. Select the device (TV, audio deo, dvd, etc.) you want to program. If you do not see your TV or the device listed, use the DIRCTV Code Lookup Tool to find the five-digit code of the device.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish your remote programming. 

Program for DIRCTV Universal Remote Standard DVR or SD Receiver

1. Press the Menu button on your remote.
2. Select Parental Favs and Setup> System Setup> Remote or Remote Control> Program Remote.
3. Select the device (TV, audio DO, DVD) you want to program. If you do not see your TV or the device listed, use the DIRCTV Code Lookup Tool to find the five-digit code of the device.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish your remote programming.

Change the input source of your TV

Now that you have programmed your remote, you can change the input source of your TV so that it aligns with the labels on your remote's mode switch. If you cannot adjust the volume of your TV before programming your remote, you need to change its input source.

1. At the top of the remote, switch to Mode on the TV. 
2. Press and hold the mute and select buttons at the same time until the green light on the top of your remote comes twice.
3. Enter the 960 using the keypad on the remote control. The green light should flash twice.
4. At the top of the remote, slide the mode switch on the DIRCTV logo.

Genie Remote

Program DIRCTV whose remote for your HDTV or audio Dio device

These steps will take you through the automatic pairing process for your genie remote. If this process doesn't work for you, follow the manual programming steps in the section below.

1. Point the remote to your Genie device (whose HD DVR, Genie Mini or Wireless Genie Mini), then press the Mute and ENTER buttons and hold twice on the top of the remote blink until the hold light. The TV screen will apply IR / RF setup when it is ready for programming.
2. Power on the device that you want to control your remote.
3. Press the Menu button on your remote.
4. Select Settings and Help> Settings> Remote control> Program remote.
5. Choose the name of the device you want to remotely control.
6. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish programming. 

Manually DRERTV Genie Remote Program for your HDTV or audio Dio device

1. Point the remote to your Genie device (whose HD DVR, Genie Mini or Wireless Genie Mini), then press the Mute and Select buttons and hold twice on the top of the remote blink until the hold light.
2. Use the buttons on your genie remote to enter code 961.
3. Press the Channel Up button once.
4. Press Enter.
5. Your choice is now set to RF when the TV screen is displayed.
6. Power on the device that you want to control your remote.
7. Press Menu on your remote.
8. Select Settings and Help> Settings> Remote control> Programs
